In One Bite:
Located in the Shangri-La hotel in Dubai, YOY is a contemporary Ukrainian restaurant led by Chef Yurii Kovryzhenko. It stands out for the way it revamps traditional dishes and reframes them within a modern context.
Standout Features
The Ambience: A predominantly neutral palette makes the restaurant visually relaxing and naturally draws the focus on the dishes themselves, which are often beautifully decorated. One of the highlights of the interior design is a long communal table that is likely inspired by traditional feasts: it immediately hints at the intention of creating a sense of togetherness. A chandelier crafted from natural materials resembles a stork’s nest, and the warm lighting helps create a cosy yet chic atmosphere.
A Sustainabile Approach: YOY endeavours to drastically minimise waste by transforming typically discarded items into fun and tasty additions to the menu. For instance, tomato skins and watermelon rinds are turned into crispy chips and candied sweets. This practice showcases Yurii’s creativity and adds value to the project, especially for the more environmentally conscious.
Cultural Expression: The celebration of Ukrainian culture doesn’t stop at the menu choices, but extends to social activities such as occasional live performances and regular events that aim to enrich the dining experience and create an immersive feeling. The overall atmosphere will likely evoke nostalgia for some and prove to be a fun discovery for many others.
Star Dishes
(Subject to change)
The Tournedos Rossini a truly luxurious main course where the beef tenderloin is the undisputed protagonist, but the accompanying truffle gratin and Marsala sauce play key roles in providing extra complexity and indulgence. It’s a lovely interpretation of the French classic created for the Italian composer Rossini. A popular and highly satisfying choice.
The Scallop Carpaccio deviates from the more traditional offerings but aligns with YOY’s commitment to bring in a modern creative touch. A bed of thinly sliced scallops is decorated with a pretty composition consisting of avocado mousse, caviar and masago arare. It’s fresh, creamy, umami and aesthetically appealing.
The Napoleon Cake is a staple within many an eastern European household. This classic dessert is made even more fun at YOY by being served in a vintage tea cup. Chef Kovryzhenko’s version includes bourbon vanilla custard, organic strawberries and a smooth, inviting pink strawberry foam. A real treat.

Final Morsel: should you visit?
YOY is both elegant and welcoming so it will appeal to most people. The hearty simplicity of Eastern European cuisine meets the elevated culinary techniques of the chef, and a dose of sophistication enhances the flavours without compromising the cultural wholesomeness and authenticity. The menu offers a great and approachable introduction to Ukrainian cuisine for those who are unfamiliar with it, while those who know it can enjoy an exciting modern interpretation of the familiar dishes they love.
